Cell Phone Recycling:
Slamming the Phone on Waste

Cell phone recycling? When cell phones first came onto the consumer market, I never would have guessed that they would eventually become consumables. For one thing, they were humongous! They came in a bag for goodness sake! Not to mention that they cost a fortune! The equipment was expensive and the service was outrageous.

OK, so I'm really dating myself here, but the point is, that I couldn't have predicted how incredibly widespread cell phone use would eventually become. It seems now that people without a cell phone are the minority. And as technology progresses and more and more bells and whistles are added to cell phones, more people upgrade to the latest and greatest models on a fairly regular basis. Why not? They are basically free when you sign a contract. But, what happens to their old cell phones?

Cellular PhoneYou guessed it, they become trash. But cell phones are more than just garbage in those landfills, they are potentially hazardous waste. They contain lead, mercury, cadmium and arsenic. If thrown in the trash and sent to incinerators or landfills, environmental contamination can occur from combustion and leaching into soil and groundwater. YUCK! The EPA estimates cell phones will be thrown away at a rate of 130 million a year by 2005. That equals 65,000 tons of waste containing toxic metals!

Wouldn't it be great it there was a program in place to recycle old used cell phones? Never fear, Recycling-Revolution is on the job giving you the lowdown on alternatives.

There are some wonderful programs making recycling your old cell phone easy and painless. The supplies are free, postage is pre-paid, and you are paid for each cell phone that you send in. It works very similarly to the printer cartridge recycling program.
